Windows 8.1 safe mode black screen

Other users claim that no update was applied, they just restarted their computers and the black screen problem appeared.

Just like the flickering screen issue , we believe this issue to occur due to a driver or program conflict during startup. This can be caused either by an update or by possible failure of the hardware or software. But, we can show you how to fix it. We have seen computers continue to fail after the repair; and some start to work as normal with no loss of files or programs. We will show you what steps to take sequentially with the final option of refreshing your computer if all else fails.

We know refreshing your computer will lose your programs, but your files, pictures and documents are. In this guide we show you 3 ways to solve the Windows 8. To begin, we need to put the computer into recovery mode. Most laptops have a recovery partition stored on their hard drives and you can usually access this by pressing one of the F-Keys on your keyboard as the system boots up. When the DVD loads you will be given an option to repair your computer from the main menu, select this and you will be placed into recovery mode.

If all else fails, the last resort is to force your computer to automatically diagnose boot issues. However, for some this may be the only option. The method is simple. As the computer is booting, hold down the power button on your computer till the computer turns off force shutdown.

After this prompt you will be placed into recovery mode. Then uninstall any video cards that are listed and restart the system. Ctrl-alt-del gives me the task manager, but I can't get to my desktop. As I understand that you are unable to boot to Desktop and gets a black screen. Not to worry we will try to fix this issue.

This issue could be due to drivers and it can be resolved by updating the drivers. Without the correct driver, the hardware or device that you want to use won't work properly. I suggest you to remove all external devices connected to your computer except keyboard and mouse and then start your computer in low-resolution video mode.

This starts Windows using your current video driver and using low resolution and refresh rate settings. If the problem doesn't reappear in low-resolution mode, then the issue is driver related. You can resolve this by downloading display card driver from the manufacturer's website. Was this reply helpful? Yes No. Sorry this didn't help. Thanks for your feedback. Thanks Sara.

Any luck on this? This dreaded black screen is not anything that can be bypassed. Using repair mode option upon hitting escape likewise starts with the black screen after the logo shows and the throbber spins for a bit. Can you even see the F8 menu? If so try using "low resolution mode" — Hefewe1zen. Thank you for the responses and the additions of reputation. I couldn't wait any longer for a response so reinstalled already. I am afraid I can't test harrymc's solution anymore but I would have like to.
