Should i remove java updates from my computer

Second, I don't decide what ads appear on the page. They are automatically selected based on contextual relevance and user-based factors. I don't see any Mac-related ads when I view the page. Posted by: SheilaScribbles 24 May I use Frontpage for our company's website old I know, but that's the way it is and this week changed my buttons to be hover buttons.

My work computer ran it just fine. Now I have discovered that apparently you must have java on your computer for these to work. My laptop using Chrome asked to use java and I said yes. My home PC however will not display the buttons because I don't have java on it. Now I have to figure out if the hover buttons which looks so cool to me are worth it if our customers don't have java. Or neither? Posted by: Linda 24 Aug I'm thinking I'll uninstall the "rarely" used program, and update the "vulnerable" plug-in. Posted by: allan 23 Apr Java tries to install the horrendous ASK toolbar. I don't trust any software that tries to inflict such nastiness on the unwary. I don't trust that it won't install something I don't want even if I untick the appropriate boxes.

Any company promoting this leechware is a disgrace. Posted by: Danny G 15 May It can assist in repairing or removing Java when other methods fail. There's more reader feedback See all 26 comments for this article. Comments of a political nature are discouraged.

In reply to Ganesh Achar B's post on November 28, How do I know what programs are Jave related?

SpiritX Volunteer Moderator. The simple answer is to allow Java on your PC, it's quite important. Just leave it alone, it'll do your machine no harm. In reply to hovePlace's post on November 29, I recently purchased a new computer. Java has a long history of security vulnerabilities, which are now coming to the public's attention because of the widespread infection of Macs in late March by the Flashback, also called Flashfake, malware family. Java is not bundled into "clean" installations of Lion, but can be added later.

Java is a favorite target of cybercriminals because it is so easy to exploit, and also because users are frequently using outdated versions of it. The big problem is that Java installations aren't being patched, Carey said, which is a problem that can be traced back to three main issues. First of all, organizations are often unaware of the security implications of not patching their software. Second, if software that an organization depends on was written using older versions of Java, upgrading Java may cripple or altogether disable that software.

Third, many users aren't aware that Web browsers are configured with Java plug-ins enabled, which makes them susceptible to drive-by malware attacks targeting older versions of Java.

This happens with Flashback. Java shouldn't be confused with JavaScript, an unrelated language used for enabling features on web pages.

At one time, Java was absolutely necessary if you wanted to be able to use your computer for, well, just about everything. Today there is less need for it. Today there is less need for it. A growing number of security experts recommend not installing Java if you don't already have it, and perhaps even getting rid of it if you do. You can see whether your browser is running Java at this site.

A test on the site will allow you to check if your browser has Java enabled, and if so, which plug-in version is it running. If your plug-in is out of date, updates are free to download and install. Knowing if your computer actively uses Java for other applications, however, is a little tougher.
